今回は、進行形の受動態という文法について説明してみたいと思います。進行形の受動態なんていうと、今回の記事はなんだか複雑だなと思うかもしれませんが、この文法は簡単な英文法な上、日常英会話でもよく耳にします。
「誰か」が、「何か」に対して、「何らかの行動」をしている時、そしてその「何か」が文章の主語になる時に、進行形の受動態を使います。この説明を読むだけでは把握し辛いと思うので、例文を見てみて下さい。
例えば、誰かが自分の家にペンキを塗っている最中なら、以下のような進行形の受動態が使えます。
My house is being painted now.
今私の家にペンキが塗られている。
My test is being graded now.
今私のテストに成績がつけられている。
お気付きの方もいると思いますが、進行形の受動態を使う時には、以下のパターンになります。
主語 + be 動詞 + being + 過去分詞
The car + is + being + washed.
車は洗われている。
The cake is being baked.
ケーキが焼かれている。
ネイティブはこのパターンを使う時、よく「is」を省略し、前の単語に「’s」を付けます。
The cake’s being baked.
そして、もし誰がそのケーキを焼いているのかを特定したいなら、「by」を使うことが出来ます。
The cake is being baked by my mom.
ケーキが母によって焼かれている。
上記の例文は文法的には正しいのですが、日本語でも不自然なように英語でもあまり耳にはしません。ですので多くの場合、誰がそれをしているかを特定したいなら、ネイティブは受動態ではなく、能動態を使います。
My mom’s baking the cake.
母がケーキを焼いている。
この方が、英語でも日本語でも断然自然で分かりやすいですね。

beingの使い方にについてもうひとつ質問です。
“I believe in love and in human beings.”という英文なんですが、この時のbeingの意味はなんですか？
また、なぜ文の一番後ろについているんですか？
human beingは名詞でそれの複数形だと思いますが…。

He hates being asked question.
の様なbeingの使い方はどのような意味になりますか？
He hates. He is asked question. beingはHe isの短縮形と思いますがいかがでしょうか。
He hates being asked questions.
のbeingは進行形のbeingではなく動名詞のbeingです。
意味は「彼は質問を尋ねられることが嫌いだ」となります。
