外人という言葉を英語にする時には、「foreigner」、「alien」、「foreign resident」などと言いますが、これらの言葉は慎重に使ったほうが良いでしょう。日本語での「外人」が失礼だと思う人が多くいるのと同様に、英語での「foreigner」を使わない方が良いと思ってるネイティブも多くいます。
もしその外国人の国籍がどこかを知っているなら、「foreigner」ではなくその人の国籍を使ったほうが良いでしょう。例えば、
My friend Pierre is a foreigner.
僕の友達のピエールは外人だ。
と言うより
My friend Pierre is French.
僕の友達のピエールはフランス人だ。
と言った方が丁寧です。これは日本語でも同様の事が言えるのではないでしょうか。
I’m not a foreigner. I’m English.
私は外人じゃない。イギリス人だ。
しかし、その人の国籍が分からない場合は少し困りますね。その場合には、「foreigner」を使う英語のネイティブも沢山います。もし「foreigner」という単語が失礼だと思う場合は、「expatriate」という単語が良いでしょう。「expatriate」の意味は「自分の国に住んでいない人」なので格好良いイメージがあります。そしてこの「expatriate」をよく「expat」と略すので、日本に住んでいる外国人が自分のことを「expat」と言っているのを何度も見たことがあります。
I am really enjoying the expat lifestyle in Japan.
日本で外国人の生活をとても楽しんでいる。
Most of my friends are expats.
僕の友達の多くは外国人だ。
If you want to learn English in Japan, you should hang out with expats.
日本で英語を勉強したい場合、外国人と遊んだほうがいいよ。
最後に、外国人に関するフレーズも説明します。
外国人学生や留学生の場合、「foreign student」 より 「international student」のほうが丁寧です。
そしてalienという単語は、通常の番組宇宙人という意味になりますが、アメリカの政府はよく外国人を「alien」と呼びます。例えば、アメリカの政府は不法在留外国人を「illegal alien」と呼びます。しかし、多くの人はこのフレーズに良い印象を持ってないので、「illegal immigrant」のほうが丁寧な呼び方でしょう。

foreignerは、発音もなんだか柔らかいし、悪い印象もなかったので、これは知りませんでした。
ほんと学校でもコレで習ってますし。

No one think ‘foreigner’ in English or
‘gaikokujin’ in Japanese are bad words in Japan at all.Many Japanese think that those are good
words.
Why?
1.)Every schools & universities in Japan have
taught them just the one word of ‘foreigner’ to express about you.
2.)The government and its agencies also use
those words as just a ‘generic expression as
pronoun’.So,’ foreign resident'(=zairyu
gaikokujin) is usually used there.Then,most people use the words without any bad intent.For example,’The residents of the flats are all
foreigners.’Someone would say so with good
intent in Japan.
If you are living in Japan and teaching some Japanese English language,you must know most of them misunderstand that ‘foreigner’ is a good
word.Nevertheless,why did you explain that many Japanese knew those words were bad?

If someone told you like that,it’s intent will have been so strange.
It sounds like someone tried to reduce somebody Japanese to something bad by telling you so.
If we had known that,we could say with another word about you.But,we had not known that.
How could we say what we had not known?
You should notice that someone or something has existed between you and us to let us misunderstand each other.
By the way,I’ll try to call someone ‘expats’ or ‘expatriates’ from now on,even if it is written that ‘expatriates’ means ‘ to use force or law to remove someone from their own country’at the begining in the Japanese dictionary.

Calling someone an illegal immigrant is also rude. Human beings aren’t illegal. Use the phrase undocumented immigrant if you MUST discuss this. Furthermore, the term expat is seen as elitist and referring to immigrants who have the choice to move. The best is to be as specific as possible, and if you do not know where someone is from, then what is the point of talking about it?
