「vice versa」の意味、使い方のパターン

Luke

こんにちは、イギリス生まれ・東京在住、英語教師で作家のLukeです。今週、僕が書いたオノマトペ(擬態語・語音後)についての本 が出版されました。是非チェックしてみて下さい!

今回、「vice versa」という役立つフレーズを紹介したいと思います。「vice versa」は「逆も同じ」という意味になります。ネイティブは、「and」と「vice versa」を文章の最後に付けえ、先ほど言ったことの反対も正しいという意味で使います。

。。。。。。。+and + vice versa.

What is in my interest is also in yours and vice versa.
私の利益はあなたの利益でもあり、またその逆もしかり。

When I’m free, you’re busy, and vice versa.
私に時間があってもあなたは忙しいし、反対の場合もあるわ。

And vice versa?
その逆はどうですか?

大抵、逆の状態を説明するのが少々面倒な時に、「vice versa」を使います。そのため、フォーマルな英語では、「vice versa」はあまり使われていません。代わりに、「the opposite is also true」などのフレーズが良いと思います。

    そのうち海外ドラマのどこかで耳にしそうな感じです!♪
    ところで、タイトルですが、
    日本語のカタカナで書くと、「パターン」です。
    カタカナ語は厄介なものですね^^;

  • Hi.
・What is in my interest is also in yours and vice versa.
You translated ‘ interest ‘ in the sentence as like ‘ plus ‘ which is ‘ rieki ‘ in Japanese.
‘ interest ‘ is countable noun in the meaning.
It is used as ‘ my interest ‘ ( i.e. a single interest ) ,then ‘ interest ‘ is singular form in the sentence.
Meanwhile,’ interest ‘ has also another meaning as ‘ uncountable noun ‘ for finance.
‘ in my interest ‘ in above sentence does not mean not only money.
However, ‘ interest ‘ for finance means ‘ money’.
    For example,
・The bond is an agreement by a government to
pay you interest on the money.
Additionally,I wondered why is ‘ on the money ‘ used in it? Are these sentences wrong that ‘ to pay you interest BY money ‘ or ‘ to pay you interest WITH money ‘ ?
    Then,I found the following usages:
    1.)
    ・( UK ) She’s on (= earning) £25,000 a year.
‘ on ‘ is preposition represents Financial
Support used to show what is providing.
    So, ‘ on ‘ = earning.
But,the above sentence do not explain ‘ Support ‘ but ‘ Bond ‘. Then, the usage of ‘ on ‘ is not relevant.
    2.)
・ My money is ON the bond markets getting it right.
The above sentence is something similar to below:
” The bond is an agreement by a government to pay you interest ON the money.”
The previous example sentence represents the usage of ‘ money ‘ in business english.
However, the usage ( i.e. somebody’s money is on something ) means that ‘ someone strongly believes that a particular thing is likely to happen ‘. Then, the usage of ‘ on ‘ is not
    relevant,too.
    3.)
    Finally,I’ve found the following ” Idioms “.
・ His prediction was ” Right On The Money “.
” ( right ) on the money ” is idiom in US English.
However, it seems to be used in also UK english.
After all,I think we can say below:
” The bond is an agreement by a government to pay you interest on the money.”
    ||
” The bond is an agreement by a government to pay you interest correctly.”
