Luke

こんにちは、イギリス生まれ・東京在住、英語教師で作家のLukeです。今週、僕が書いたオノマトペ(擬態語・語音後)についての本 が出版されました。是非チェックしてみて下さい!

limitedは「限られた」という意味になります。

We only have a limited amount of time.
私たちは限られた時間しかない。

My friend is quite limited in his English ability, but he tries very hard.
友達は基本的な英語力しかないけど、よく頑張っている。

limitedを使ったビジネスのフレーズは沢山あります。例えば、a limited companyとa limited partnershipです。

limited company
有限会社

limited partnership
合資会社

limitは色々なフレーズにも出てきます。たとえば、怒る時には

There are limits.
物事には限度がある。

I’m a nice person, but there are limits.
僕は優しい人間だけど、限度がある。

  • Hi.
    1.) ‘ amount ‘ is money
‘ amount ‘ is often printed on receipts.
In this case, ‘ amount ‘ is ‘ uncountable noun’ and means ‘ a sum of money ‘.
    ・ amount = a sum of money
( uncountable noun) ( countable noun)
・ sum = an amount of money
( countable noun) ( countable noun)
    For eample,
    ・ A + B = C : C is amount.
    ・ D + E = F : F is amount.
    How about ‘ C + F ‘ ?
    ・ C + F = G : G is also amount.
‘ Amount ‘ is also used to express the sum of amounts.
    2.) ‘ amount ‘ is quantity
In Japanese many words represent quantity.
    ・1 pencil = -ppon
    ・ 3 pencils= -bon
    ・ 3 paper = -mai
    ・ 3 coins = -mai
    ・ 3 books = – satu
    ・ 3 cars = -dai
    ・3stones = -ko
    It’s unlimited..
Anyway, when I buy 10 gold coins, what does its quantity express in English ?
10 coins (i.e Amount or Quantity:If sth is countable items )
    ×
    $1,000 ( i.e Price;Per 1 coin )
    ||
    $ 10,000 (i.e Amount )
So,’ amount ‘ is used as ‘ amount of money ‘ or ‘ amount of quantity ‘.
    3.) ‘ an amount of ‘
In this case,’ amount ‘ is ‘ countable noun ‘.
Beceuse, the meaning ‘ amount ‘ is specified by ‘ an ‘ which is added to a word ‘ amount ‘.
    For example,
・’ Your friends have a limited amount of money to buy 10 gold coins.’
The above sentence represents that you think it is not very much to putting in their money to buy those.
You can also say like this using ‘ the sum of ‘ below:
・ Your friends said this is the sum of money so far.
In this case,’ the sum of money’ does not mean just an ‘ amount ‘.
Because, this usage has the meaning ‘ the sum of something is not very much ‘ without using a word ‘ limited ‘.
Then, I have to take care of the usage, when I have enough money to buy sth.
    I prefer the usage of ‘ amount ‘ without ‘ limited ‘.
    Thanks.:)
